Season 2009 - Wrap Up
There is only one team that finished the season totally saatisfied. For the second time in three years, that team is
Geelong. After finishing the season second on the ladder, the Cats took home the premiership.
Despite being undefeated upto the round 14 blockbuster, the aura of invisibility had gone from Geelong. Cut down by a big
injury count that included Josh Hunt, Tom Harley, Brad Ottens, Gary Ablett, Paul Chapman, Steve Johnson, Matthew Scarlett,
James Kelly, Harry Taylor, Cameron Ling, Max Rooke, Darren Milburn, Shannon Byrnes, Tom Lonergan, David Wojcinski and Travis Varcoe
all missing games. The upside to that was getting games into the likes of Tom Gillies and Simon Hogan (six and 10 games respectively) and the debuts of
Jeremy Laidler and Nathan Djerrkura.
What went wrong
Another year old, the question for Geelong is, are they set for a decline. The answer is yes, but probably not that much for 2010.
And certainly not in the fantasy game where an amazing five players averaged over 100 DT and SC points (not including Steve Johnson's 99).
Ablett, Chapman, Selwood, Bartel and Corey.
Geelong plays a very high possession game which means a lot of fantasy points. They were the second highest scoring
team in the DT competition.

Under The Gun
When you make three successive GFs and win two of them, life is good. And no gun in sight.
Burning Question: Another year older. Can they sustain their run?
Geelong's star players are slowly getting older. Ablett (26 years when the new season starts), Chapman (28 years), Selwood (22 years), Bartel (26 years), Corey (28 years), Johnson (27 years)
Ling (29 years) and Scarlett (31 years). Their decline won't be drastic this year and expect them only decline slightly in terms of scoring,
bar maybe Corey, but they now have a higher risk of injury. Especially players like Chapman who have a history of soft tissue problems. After three grand finals and
two flags, we don't apologise for nit-picking when it comes to talking down the Cat's chances in 2010.
