Season 2009 - Wrap Up
Hawthorn finished a disappointing tenth last year with a spat of injuries early on. However, this
accelerated the progress of a number of younger players and provided them with opportunities to
play senior footy. Ryan Schoenmakers, Liam Shiels, Beau Muston, Shane Savage, Riley Milne,
Matthew Suckling and Brendan Whitecross all debuted for the Hawks and all should be a part of
Alastair Clarkson's long-term plans.
Lance Franklin was the most popular player in the DT competition, so it comes as no surprise, he was the most villified.
Only managed to outscore six other teams in DT team scoring.

Under The Gun
Shaun Burgoyne has already caused a furore and he hasn't even played a quarter of football for the Hawthorn football club. Both the cost of acquisition, big salary and the Campbell Brown fiasco has put a focus on Burgoyne and the fans will be watching him
intently. The weight of opinion within the Hawthorn camp is that he was not worth what they gave up. Now let's look at Burgoyne the fantasy performer. He is a star in the SC format, averaging over 103 the previous 3 years before 2010 and missed only 3 games in total. As for DT, he averaged around 85 over the same period. Last year, he came back from injury and had mixed performances and avergaed around 80 for both DT and SC. If he's fit and healthy, he's a game breaker, but th injury is a risk.
Burning Question: Does Rioli develop the engine he needs to play in the midfield?
Answer yes to this question and we have a stud in the making. That's the million dollar question and because of
his interrupted season, there are more questions than answers. But we'll answer the question in the following way.
It took Gary Ablett Jnr. five years to transition from talented small forward to bona fide champion midfielder.
Leigh Montagna - 8 years. but he did crack an average of 95 (DT ) and 104 (SC) in his sixth year.
Dane Swan - It took four seasons to average over 100 points.
We could go on, but ther number don't change much
except if your name is Joel Selwood.
So history is really saying Rioli is atleast another year from becoming a star fantasy performer.
Some fantasy football stats for Cyril Rioli:
Averages DT (76) SC (78)
High DT (113) SC (120)
Low DT (34*) SC (47*)
90+ Points DT (5/19) SC (7/19)
Sub-70 Points DT (4/19*) SC (5/19*)
* does not include round 11 where he got injured early
